What will I need
You will be expected to provide a Montana Fishing
License (12 and older), lip balm, sun screen, hat with a
brim, eye protection is
mandatory (polarized preferred),
foul weather gear (minimum jacket with a hood), wading
shoes, if planning to wade, waders depending on the
season, leaders and flies.
Eye protection is important when in the boat even if you're not
fishing! Polarized glasses help cut the glare off the water.
Like other items in a fisherman's tackle box, flies, are
considered a consumable item. Your guide will help you
choose the correct fly pattern and size to purchase. The
determining factors being your experience, what river or area
of river to be fished, weather conditions, time of year, known
hatches expected and what worked yesterday.
Conditions can and do change daily, sometimes several times
a day.

You may want to purchase flies prior to your trip or perhaps
you are a fly tier and want to bring your own flies to use.
There is no greater sense of accomplishment than catching a
wild fish using a fly you made yourself. Please ask us what
flies we would expect to use for the
rivers and dates of your trip.

If you have a personal favorite fly that works for you on
your local stream by all means bring it along. It won't be the
first time I've been surprised at what a fish will eat.

We recommend certain flies, not to spend more money, but because
we believe they will catch fish.
Please remember we are not in the business of selling flies
but in the business of catching fish.
Most guides have acquired a large assortment of flies. Don't
be surprised if they reach into their personal fly box in an
effort to let you catch that one fish that makes
your trip more memorable.
Gratuities are usually used to replenish fly boxes
and are greatly appreciated.
Rod and reel provided if needed.
Lunches provided on full day trips.
Getting the boat and gear ready to launch on the Yellowstone
We use boats specifically designed for fly fishing and they are
both safe and comfortable. The high maneuverability and
natural drift characteristics of the drift boat helps compensate
for fast water and any lack of casting technique, allowing for a
longer natural drift of the fly. This is beneficial to both amateur
and expert casters and makes for an enjoyable way to learn the
river.
For proper clothing just look at the pictures on our website to
see what others have worn. On any given day the weather can
go from 40 deg in the morning to 90 deg in the afternoon and
back to the 60's in the evening and then it might also rain.
