The Madison River flows out of Yellowstone National Park
near West Yellowstone. It continues through Hebgen
Lake and Quake Lake into the Madison Valley, one valley
to the West of West Yellowstone.
The Madison lends itself to flyfishing from the drift boat
with some wade fishing along the way.
Fly fishing the Madison
The Madison River is born at Madison Junction, where
the Fire Hole and Gibbon Rivers meet inside the Park.
Once leaving Yellowstone National Park the Madison is
controlled by several dams making summertime flows
very dependable.

High water can be mid May through the
first week of July.

The famous Salmon Fly Hatch starts during
the last week of June and runs into 3rd week of July.
Caddis, May Flies and Golden Stones
start then as well.
This can be flyfishing at it's best.
Salmon flys and others on the Madison
Some people say Salmon Flies are as
big as your thumb. That all depends on
the size of your thumb.
It's a good thing they don't bite!
